Car Hire Payment Processing Error Originates Massive Charges

A payment processing error has reportedly resulted in some Australian customers being charged up to 100 times the cost of their car rental bookings, highlighting the risks that technical failures can pose within modern payment systems.

According to reporting by Tom Williams for Information Age, several customers of Budget Car Rental who used American Express cards were unexpectedly charged amounts reaching tens of thousands of dollars instead of the much smaller sums they had originally agreed to pay. The issue reportedly affected transactions processed between late April and mid-May 2026. American Express told Information Age that the problem stemmed from a decimal-point error in a transaction file generated by a third-party payment processor used by Avis Budget Group, the parent company of Budget Car Rental. The company said affected transactions were corrected after the issue was identified and that associated fees, charges, and interest were reversed.

However, the incident demonstrates how even short-lived processing errors can have significant consequences for consumers. One affected customer told Information Age that the incorrect charge pushed his account beyond its credit limit, temporarily affecting his ability to use his card while travelling. The customer later pursued a formal complaint regarding the handling of the situation.

The case also highlights the complexity of modern payment ecosystems, where merchants, card issuers, and third-party processors may all play a role in handling transactions. When errors occur, determining responsibility can become challenging for consumers seeking answers and compensation.

Consumer advocates frequently recommend that customers monitor card statements closely and report unexpected charges immediately. In Australia, consumers who cannot resolve disputes directly with a business may be able to seek assistance through their card issuer, external dispute resolution schemes, or relevant consumer protection agencies.

As digital payments continue to dominate everyday transactions, incidents such as this serve as a reminder that even relatively small technical mistakes can have outsized impacts on customers.
